AWAKE wanted from the start to include in its festival concept a piece of history, starting from the wonderful story of its host, Teleki family’s castle from Gornesti. In this direction, we are going to dispose an open air library for the festival’s first edition, as a symbol of the first Transylvanian public library, founded by Count Samuel Teleki, at the beginning of 19th century.

Teleki Library from Tirgu Mures, also named Teleki-Bolyai Library, opens its doors in 1802, as the first public library in Transylvania. Its founder, Samuel Teleki, started collecting the books during its studies abroad, where he visited public and private famous libraries. Being passionate by bibliophily, Count Teleki has purchased books during his many journeys and gifted the Teleki Library with 40.000 volumes, among with very valuable copies like manuscripts, extremely old books and first editions coming from well known european publishing houses. Nowadays, the Teleki Library is a real life book museum, where the original furniture and arrangements of books are being kept.

The love for books was transmitted from generation to generation in the Teleki family, Gornesti castle actually also being the host of a very impressive library, which at the beginning of the 20th century was including over 6000 volumes. During the Second World War, the castle was destroyed along with thousands of copies, but most of them were saved and donated to the Telekiana Library in Tirgu Mures.

In the memory of these impressive libraries, the AWAKE organisers along with Litera Publishers, will recreate an open air library in the festival area, on the shore of Helesteu Lake, at the foot of the castle, under the shadow of some old Cedar trees. The structure will have a special architectural design, inspired by an oversized library cube and it will contain over 400 copies. Among these you will be able to find:

      –   the best fiction, non fiction and autobiography books and testimonials, like:

       –  recently screened books like “Tony & Susan”, by Austin Wright (“Nocturnal Animals” directed by Tom Ford), “Me before you”, by Jojo Moyes or “Carol”, by Patricia Highsmith;

       –  contemporary authors novels, but also classics like Agatha Christie, Richard Yates, James Joyce, E.L. Doctorow, William Saroyan, F. Scott Fitzgerald s.a;

       –  personal development and spiritual books like “How to love”, “How to relax”, “How to walk” by Thich Nhat Hanh, “15 things you have to give up to be happy” by Luminita Saviuc, or “Mindfulness Journal” by Corinne Sweet;

      –   traveling, coloring and anti-stress therapy books, like “Enchanted Forest” and “Secret Garden” by famous illustrator Johanna Basford.

The AWAKE audience will have the opportunity to shuffle or even borrow books during the festival, whereas at the end of the event, all the books will be donated to a library from the Mures County.

Maria Vidrascu, Executive Director of Litera Publishers: “Reading a good book on a well selected musical background, in a fairytale location like Teleki estate is a must try combination! Over 400 Litera books from different categories will be available to all the readers during the entire festival period, and we are very happy that these will remain in the community afterwards.”

Laura Coroianu, CEO Emagic, Awake Festival Director: “Teleki estate is more than a spectacular natural space, with an impressive architectural monument, but also a place full of history and an important cultural centre of Mures and Transylvania. Therefore, building a real library, in open air, with a multitude of books which our AWAKE audience can read under the shadow of some very old trees, wasn’t a challenge for us, but a dream.”

The library’s design will be a special one, centered around a cube full of books. The entire idea is suggested through an ensemble of oversized cubes, the architecture being designed by Monograf Studio under the coordination of the well known architect Attila Kim.
